Prospective Heyl Scholars applying as high school seniors to Kalamazoo College must apply to Kalamazoo College by the Early Action admissions deadline of November 1st.  Regular Decision candidates will not be considered for the Heyl Scholarship. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all supporting materials (references, transcripts and test scores) have been received by the Kalamazoo College Admission Office by November 1st. In addition, you must complete the Heyl Scholarship Application.

  • Have at least one and not more than two science/math teachers or an instructor from post-secondary coursework submit a Scholarship Evaluation. A link to the evaluation form will be emailed to the specified evaluator once the applicant has submitted their application.
    • Please note that evaluation responses should focus on the student’s academics and academic habits. Evaluators are encouraged to include examples that demonstrate the student’s character as well as resilience/fortitude.
• Submission of a Kalamazoo College Early Action application

Current Kalamazoo College students that applied for the Heyl Science Scholarship as a high school senior will need to contact the Executive Director early in the fall term to determine if the foundation is accepting applications from current students.

Prospective Heyl Scholars applying to the WMU Bronson School of Nursing as high school seniors must submit their WMU admissions application by December 15th.  Later applicants will not be considered for the Heyl Scholarship. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all supporting materials (references, transcripts and test scores) have been received by the WMU Office of Admissions by December 15th. 

WMU Bronson School of Nursing applicants, who are awarded the Heyl Scholarship, must also maintain direct admission requirements.

Direct admit applicants are first year students at WMU that were exceptional high school graduates and directly admitted to the BSN program.

Heyl Scholarship Application Requirements

A complete application includes the:

• Heyl Scholarship Application which contains:
  • A few free answer response questions
  • The online submission of official high school transcript(s) from Parchment.
  • The online submission of an unofficial WMU college transcript indicating in progress course work
  • Have at least one and not more than two science/math teachers or an instructor from post-secondary coursework submit a Scholarship Evaluation. A link to the evaluation form will be emailed to the specified evaluator once the applicant has submitted their application.
    • Applicants submitting two evaluations may elect to have one submitted from a science instructor from post-secondary coursework.
      • Please note that evaluation responses should focus on the student’s academics and academic habits. Evaluators are encouraged to include examples that demonstrate the student’s character as well as resilience/fortitude.
• CommonApp Application (copy) submitted for admissions to Western Michigan University
• Direct Admissions Essay and Personal Statement on the Central Attributes of Nursing
• Interview with WMU’s Director of Nursing by January 10th
  • To schedule this interview, an official WMU college transcript that indicates completed course work to date must be submitted to Dr. Lisa Singleterry, WMU’s Director of Nursing, for review.

Awarding of Heyl Scholarships is contingent upon entry into the BSN program.

A current WMU student that desires a career in nursing as demonstrated through their commitment to the field.

2. Meet or be working towards the admissions criteria for the WMU Bronson School of Nursing  
3. Completed at least 12 credit hours at WMU or another equivalent accredited institution 
4. Cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher 
5. Demonstrated interest to the Nursing field as proven by supporting evidence
   • Examples of supporting evidence include work in the nursing field, admissions to the WMU Bronson School of Nursing, successful completion of nursing pre-requisite course work

    • Freshman applicant – One evaluation must be from a high school science teacher. The second evaluation can be from a high school teacher or post-secondary instructor. A link to the evaluation form will be emailed to the specified evaluator once the applicant has submitted their application.
    • Sophomore/Junior applicants – One evaluation must be from a post-secondary science instructor. The second evaluation can be from any post-secondary instructor. A link to the evaluation form will be emailed to the specified evaluator once the applicant has submitted their application.

RN to BSN applicants have completed an ADN at another institution, likely a community college, passed their RN licensure exam, and desire to further their education by earning a BSN at WMU.   

Application Steps and Requirements

1. Meet the Heyl Science Scholarship eligibility criteria
2. Achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (on a four-point scale) in the nursing associate degree or nursing diploma program from which they graduated  
3. Have a current registered nursing license no later than three months after beginning WMU’s BSN program 
4. Completed the following pre-requisite courses:
   • FCS 2250 or CIS 1020: Computer Literacy, 3 credits 
   • College-level writing course (English), 3 or 4 credits
   • Mathematics/elective (algebra), 3 credits
5. Complete the Heyl Scholarship Application

  • Have two letters of recommendation submitted
    • These letters can be from post-secondary science or nursing instructors or an employer. A link to the evaluation form will be emailed to the specified evaluator once the applicant has submitted their application.
      • Letter writers are encouraged to include examples that demonstrate the student’s character as well as resilience/fortitude.
