Undergraduate Scholarship Application

Competitive Applicants

The successful candidate for a Heyl Scholarship to Kalamazoo College or the WMU Bronson School of Nursing typically has the following:

  • High school GPA greater than 3.5
  • SAT verbal greater than 500 and SAT math greater than 550 or ACT composite greater than 25
  • Challenging high school curriculum that includes one year each of biology, chemistry, and physics and four years of math
  • An interest in science, math or nursing (as demonstrated by their choice of classes and activities outside of the classroom)
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong teacher evaluations

Step-by-Step Application Process

  • Annual Information Session
    • The annual information session for high school seniors and their parents/guardians will be held virtually on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 6 pm. All prospective applicants and their parents/guardians are encouraged to attend.  
  • Early Action Deadline 
    • Prospective Heyl Scholars applying to Kalamazoo College must apply to Kalamazoo College by the Early Action admissions deadline of November 1st.  Regular Decision candidates will not be considered for the Heyl Scholarship. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all supporting materials (references, transcripts and test scores) have been received by the Kalamazoo College Admission Office by November 1st
    • Prospective Heyl Scholars applying to the WMU Bronson School of Nursing must submit their WMU applications by December 15th.  Later applicants will not be considered for the Heyl Scholarship. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all supporting materials (references, transcripts and test scores) have been received by the WMU Office of Admissions by December 15th

Heyl applicants should not apply under a single-choice early action or early decision program to another college. 

  • Heyl Scholarship Application Deadline 
    • Heyl Scholarship applications and all supporting documents are due by December 1st.
      • A complete application includes the online application form and the online submission of official transcript(s) and SAT* or ACT* scores.  
      • At least one and not more than two science/math teacher evaluations submitted online. You may also use an instructor from post-secondary coursework for this requirement. 
      • Submission of a Kalamazoo College Early Action or Early Decision or Western Michigan University application by the institutions specified early action deadline.
      • WMU Bronson School of Nursing applicants, must also complete and submit the supplemental application.

* Due to COVID-19 SAT or ACT scores are not required for the 2020-2021 application.

  • December – January Heyl Scholarship Interviews 
    • Following the application deadline, all applicants will be interviewed in December and January. It is the applicant’s responsibility to schedule their interviews with Dr. Williams (science/math) or Dr. Lagerwey (nursing).
