ABOUT

Each year, the Heyl Science Scholarship attracts numerous competitive high school students from Kalamazoo Public Schools who are interested in beginning their careers in STEM at Kalamazoo College or Nursing at the Western Michigan University Bronson School of Nursing. Scholars selected for the program are awarded a scholarship for tuition, mandatory fees, room, and a book allowance. Scholars are required to ultimately pursue a major in the natural sciences at Kalamazoo College or Nursing at the Western Michigan University Bronson School of Nursing. Since 1971, more than 400 Heyl scholarships and/or fellowships have been awarded to promising scholars, many of whom have continued on to advance the scientific community.

Our Purpose

The F. W. and Elsie L. Heyl Science Scholarship is an investment in Kalamazoo public school students whose natural inclination and curiosity is in the study of science. Kalamazoo is rich in promising science students as evidenced by the number of graduates that continue on to earn advanced degrees. Kalamazoo College ranks in the top 2 percent among all U.S. colleges and universities surveyed for the percent of graduates ultimately earning a doctorate, according to the National Science Foundation. Kalamazoo College is the only Michigan college or university among the top 100 institutions nationally. According to a study published in 2020 by the Higher Education Data Sharing (HEDS) Consortium, Kalamazoo College is in the top 1% among all U.S. public and private institutions in the proportion of graduates earning doctorates in life sciences.
